It’s a girl!
The Georgia Aquarium welcomed a female beluga calf into the world on Sunday morning.
Maris, a 20-year-old beluga was in labor for three hours, according to a video released by the Georgia aquarium. In the past two weeks, volunteers have watched Maris around the clock for signs of delivery.
“It was really a watching and waiting kind of game where we had to let Maris do what is natural and just be there for her,” Tonya Clauss, director of animal health at the Georgia Aquarium, said in the video.
Shortly after birth, the calf swam to the surface to take its first breath, officials said. The calf weighed in at 126.5 pounds and is 59 inches long, according to Dr. Gregory Bossart, senior vice president and chief veterinary officer at the aquarium.
